  • Won national first place award by Society of Professional Journalists for co-bylined story on Confederate monument protests at UNC

  • Coordinated with managing editor of newspaper and news director of broadcasts to determine best presentation of stories while holding final editorial call on all content

  • Directed coverage of Elon's presidential inauguration, two hurricanes and midterm elections. 

  • Managed a staff of over 70 reporters, editors, designers and analysts as the top leadership role in the organization

  • Handled administrative duties and oversee organization's budget with consultation from advisers

  • Led weekly staff meetings and set agenda for workshops and retreats with the organization's executive staff

  • Acted as liaison with the Elon community by maintaining relationships with community leaders and representing ENN at official functions

Investigative Reporting Fellow

  • Nominated by faculty in the School of Communications to represent Elon University at one of the most prestigious journalism fellowships in the country

  • Independently researched, investigated and developed sources in multiple cities for enterprise story on hate crimes against transgender sex workers

  • Supported multi-byline story on hate crimes against LGBT individuals on a nationwide scale

  • Reported under the tutelage of Jacquee Petchel, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, and Leonard Downie Jr., the former executive editor of the Washington Post

The Charlotte Observer

March 2015 - June 2018

  • Reported on sports, metro and investigations desks during 2017 internship. Freelanced for Observer since 2015

  • Won professional award from North Carolina Press Assocation for co-bylined A1 investigative story on HIV rates in Mecklenburg County. 

  • Broke news of LeBron James' unannounced visit to Charlotte. Tweeted video which earned 11,000 views, 66 retweets and 83 favorites

  • Live tweeted events, reported on hard deadlines, proactively sourced enterprise and spot news stories

  • Notable stories included changes in an impoverished neighborhood Mecklenburg County Health Department failures, ACC Football Media Days, and high school sports coverage

  • Oversaw the assignment and placement of stories and photos so that the newspaper may be completed and published in an orderly manner.

  • Directed coverage of new university president, student deaths, inclusivity concerns and other important stories to campus community

  • Produced eight special editions including a new president edition in 36 hours, Best of 2017 Edition and Black History Month Edition

  • Aided in reporting on the official doccumentaoin for the Internet Governenace Forum that was sent to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland

  • Conducted over 50 man-on-the -street interviews with professionals from Microsoft, Google and many officials from international governments

NABJ Student Projects

  • Selected for highly competitive, all expenses paid fellowship to report on NABJ's 2017 National Convention in New Orleans

  • Reported rapidly on enterprise stories, copy edited, tweeted live from events and produced three newspapers on deadline

James Wesley Willard II Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is named in memory of James Wesley Willard II, a student in Elon University's School of Communications who died in 2005. It is awarded to a student in School of Communications who has a strong academic record.
